On a confidential assignment from a California State Senator to research land claims concerning what appears to be state property at a dry lake in the Mojave Desert, Vietnam veteran Aaron McCaan stumbles into trouble with a drug operation linked to a puzzling case of murder, misperceptions, and Indian identities. He develops an abiding interest in a waitress he meets only to have her disappear. Someone tries to kill him for reasons he can’t explain. A tough detective from Los Angeles tries to put the pieces together and finds McCaan in the middle of it and uncooperative. Stuck between the rock of justice for an Indian vet and the hard place of the law against multiple homicide, McCaan takes a cross-cultural hike full of more turns and tunnels than a rabbit field on steroids. Along the way, he faces up to problems of evidence based on the truth one needs to find, not necessarily the truth of what actually happened, and all of it is saturated with hauntings of conscience and resolve about the Others of our world. |
